Cambodia - Again

I was lucky enough to head off to Cambodia for the weekend again this year for the Annual Kep Trio. I know I posted all about it last year but I have to say again. . . .what an amazing trip! It is a once in a lifetime experience that I have now been able to do twice! And if I could do it every year forever, I would.

Last year it was only my friend Tracy and I but this year our little group grew to five of us including Julie, Wendy, and Tarana. It was such a great group of fun girls who are, considering the trip, serious troopers!

We stayed in Kep the same tiny little huts that make you feel like you are in the middle of the jungle with only a cold water spigot and mosquito nets to cover your beds. The owner is an excellent cook and after staying the night and having two great meals, we each paid $12! Perfect. The 10k bike ride was a lot of fun; the 10k run not quite as much fun but I made it the whole way having to stop to walk a few times. Whew.

The next night we stayed in a beautiful hotel in Phnom Pehn with air conditioning and hot water! Heaven. We wandered around the city for a while and visited an interesting night market. But the best part was eating at this great local restaurant. The food was amazing and we even ate tarantula. Yes, I said tarantula. It was one of their appetizers and it sounded like a good idea at the time. When it arrived I was thinking it may be disguised in some way - chopped up, covered in cheese, something. But no, it was just four giant spiders sitting on a dish. Wow. The head and legs were actually sort of tasty - just like something crunchy and deep fried. . . and hairy. But once I got to the body, that was a bit more difficult - it was a bit too meat-like and chewy for my taste. But I got it down and kept it down! I'll add that to Vietnamese Snake Wine as one of the grossest things I've ever eaten. . . whew.

I wish had more photos to share but my camera died on the first day! Ugh! The weekend went by way too fast but it was another wonderful two days in a beautiful country for a great cause.

Chinese New Year - Bintan and Hong Bao

Gong Xi Fa Cai! We celebrated Chinese New Year in lots of ways this year. We saw so many lion dances that the kids started doing them outside one day with towels over them. They were pretty good, too!

We spent a few days in Bintan at the Nirwana Gardens Resort. It was a very relaxing trip and we just swam and relaxed. We went to a great lion dance performance and watched some live singing while the kids played in a big foam pit!

Back in Singapore, we went out with friends for a traditional CNY meal of Yu Sheng. This is a salad that is brought to the table in parts, then everyone sitting at the table helps to put the salad together and then everyone grabs their chopsticks and "tosses" the salad together trying to toss it as high in the air as possible! Then everyone says something about having an auspicious new year and we sit down to eat it. Very interesting and tasty!

We also headed over to the River Hong Bao again this year. This is an amazing festival in downtown Singapore celebrating CNY. They have incredible sculptures of all the zodiac animals and lots of live entertainment. The boys loved running around and finding their "animal" and getting their photos with them. This year they even had carnival rides.

There are so many traditions to the Chinese New Year that I think it will take me a long time to learn all of them but it is fun to take part in whatever we can while we are here. While I was in Chinatown I bought a few lanterns we brought them up ot our roof, lit them, and watched them float away. That is one of my most favorite things. . . so peaceful and pretty.
